HP Designjet reseller GDL (www.hpdesignjet.net) is launching the ‘Oldest Printer in Town’ competition, seeking to find the oldest solvent printer still currently in operation. Two years ago, GDL launched a similar competition to find the oldest wide format CAD and graphics printer still being used in the UK. The results varied widely with winning entries from companies still using the first ever HP Designjet launched, and included a solicitors in the north of England with a working ammonia based wide format printer/copier.

This year the aim is to find a company still using one of the early model solvent printers. The idea ‘if it ain’t broke, it don’t need fixing’ holds fast here in the UK and so the people at GDL now want signmakers and wide format printers who love their old machines to register their printers for the promotion, with a chance to win a fabulous weekend holiday to Barcelona, home to the European HQ for Hewlett Packard.

Graham Baulch of GDL explained the reasons behind the promotion: ‘We’ve been involved in this industry for over 30 years, and have seen many technologies evolve and grow with ever faster speeds, accuracy and colour gamut. Inks and health and safety considerations have also had an influence in how wide format printers have developed and changed. Our previous Wild Westthemed campaign was a roaring success so we thought we would reinvigorate it for the solvent printer market. As a major equipment supplier to the Sign and Display market we thought it would be a really fun way of showing just how much people love their wide format printers.’

HPDesignjet.net hopes that by making a big impression with this campaign it can get the digital print world excited about the amazing growth in technology witnessed throughout the years. The competition ends on May 31, and the winner will be showcased on the GDL stand (J12) at Sign & Digital UK, to be held at Birmingham NEC from April 30 to May 2. Why not drop by and see the latest HP Latex and Z6200 machines, as well as a range of media for the printers.
