The BPIF has announced the winners of the 2024 British Book Design & Production Awards which was held at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London on 29 January.

Across the 18 categories, there were 95 books on the shortlist. The awards highlighted the importance of physical printed books as Charles Jarrold, chief executive of the BPIF, stated that UK book publishers saw sales last year of £1.8 billion and that 80% of the revenues came from physical printed book publishing. He emphasised the importance books have upon challenging perspectives, increasing human engagement and spreading knowledge across the world.

The outright winners on the night were The Folio Society, finishing at the top of five categories including Photographic Books – with ‘The Planets’; Scholarly, Academic & Reference Books – with ‘On the Origin of Species’; Best Jacket/Cover Design, with ‘The Underground Railroad’; Best British Book – with ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ and also the prize of Book of the Year for the same title.

The judges agreed it was ‘a worthy winner’ and said that the book was ‘astoundingly’ finished and beautifully bound. They added that it was designed with ‘mesmerising’ illustrations that capture the feel of the book, with all aspects setting new heights.

Looking to inspire fresh talent in the industry, the award’s student category highlights the next generation. This category was won by Roisin Scott from the National College of Art and Design, who took home the trophy for her book ‘You have just been diagnosed with ADHD’.
