Four manufacturers in the coated polyester film industry – Agfa, Folex, Kernow Coatings, and Polyart – have formed a collaboration to promote sustainability within the coating sector.

The companies have established a sustainability pact to share insights and develop strategies for a more environmentally responsible future.

The film coating and laminating process, crucial for products like printed manuals, restaurant menus, and outdoor labels, faces distinct sustainability challenges, outlined Polyart. These films are designed for durability in tough conditions, making non-synthetic alternatives or laminated paper unsuitable due to their lack of long-term resilience. As a result of their long lifespan, synthetic films, though resource-efficient in their production, are seen as a sustainable option.

However, the production of these films relies on virgin raw materials, and the industry must address their environmental impact once the products reach the end of their life cycle, Polyart explained.

The pact focuses on pooling expertise to find practical, cost-effective solutions to these challenges. By collaborating, these companies aim to accelerate progress toward a greener, more sustainable future for the coated polyester film industry.
