Martin Bailey is chairing taskforce charged with developing PDFs to carry job description.

Plans have begun to make it possible to use PDFs to carry the description of a printed job in addition to the graphic content. The aim is to provide a simpler means of automating print workflows than JDF.

A new ISO task force has been formed to develop a new standard, which is chaired by Martin Bailey, chief technology officer of Cambridge headquartered RIP developer Global Graphics.

Mr Bailey said that: ‘Our first goal is a standard for graphic arts, but there has already been discussion of following on with equivalents targeted more specifically at packaging and at wide format.’

Work is being carried out under the auspices of the ISO’s TC130, which is responsible for printing standards, under a working group designated WG 2 TF 5.  The proposed number and name for the standard is ISO 21812 Graphic technology – Digital data exchange – Common document metadata for PDF files.

The first meeting of TC130 WG 2 TF 5 was held in September in San Jose, California.

Mr Bailey also added that the committee was interested in getting input into the development of the standard from any interested parties, who should contact their national standards body to tell them they are interested in ISO TC130/WG2/TF5.
