Each 1600 mm x 700 mm stand is intended to be installed in a university library or design workshop

Paper merchant GF Smith is using custom-made paper stands at universities to introduce design students to papers they may use in their future careers.

We want [students and graduates] to have access to as many of our papers as possible,’ explained Jo Pitts, marketing production manager. ‘They can take away a few of the sheets they most like […] they can then visit the Paper Smith if they want to order more. We will also update our Colour Forecast and Specialities & Textures every six months, so the stand will provide a continuous source of seasonal inspiration.’

Designed by graphic design agency Studio Makgill, and decorated in the shades of GF Smith’s Colorplan paper range, the stand holds 17 varieties of A4 samples in a range of textures, colours, effects and finishes. The company plans to update its paper selections in tune with AW and SS fashion seasons.

The first set of stands will be distributed to the University of the Creative Arts, Epsom; University of Liverpool; Manchester Metropolitan University; University of Nottingham and University of the West of England, Bristol. GF Smith hopes to produce 10 more stands every year to be installed at more universities in the UK and internationally.
