Rapidity Communications signed up for a new Ricoh Pro C9110 press at The Print Show, with production director Ben Manning travelling up from London to Birmingham to conclude the deal.

Speaking to Digital Printer at the event, Mr Manning explained that the 130 pages per minute machine will act as a back up to Rapidity’s two HP Indigo 7600 presses, while also bringing a new banner printing capability.

‘Seventy percent of our turnover is digital colour,’ he said. ‘We wanted to buy an additional machine to complement the HP Indigos and take some of the strain off them, but the Ricoh also does things they cannot do, such as the banner sheet. We can get A4 landscape without the investment in an HP Indigo 10000.’

Jobs such as A4 landscape and six-page A4s have been sub-contracted out in the past, but they are becoming an increasingly commonplace requirement, especially from the property market. ‘It will be nice to do all that in-house,’ Mr Manning added.

Rapidity is buying the Ricoh Pro C9110 with a high capacity stacker and staple finisher and a high performance Fiery E83 RIP. It can print onto 400 gsm paper stocks, making it compatible with the HP Indigo presses. The quality of print is also an upgrade on previous toner-based systems, said Mr Manning, who added: ‘We’re happy with the quality. The finish is different to the Indigos because it is toner-based, but it’s better than the toner-based systems we have had in the past.’
