First Folio Design of Hanwell, West London, has installed a Watkiss BookMaster Pro booklet maker and trimmer as it seeks to improve efficiency and reduce the amount of waste created by an old machine.
The machine is capable of producing up to 2500 booklets per hour with paper sizes up to 482 x 320 mm. Managing director Neil Pollard (pictured) commented: ‘Waste is now zero. Another key advantage over our previous machine is paper size, as it will handle a 450 mm SRA3 sheet and trim the fore edge, which we couldn’t do before.’
Mr Pollard singled out the flexibility of the machine as a highlight, saying: ‘We bought this machine primarily for quality control. We print to a variety of sizes and now we can adjust the spine position – if my press doesn’t print the job bang in the middle of the sheet, I can offset it by a millimeter or two either way to get it absolutely right.’
First Folio began as a design company but has gradually brought all print and finishing processes in house and is now almost completely self-contained. Its clients have traditionally been from the public sector, but it has recently developed a portfolio of private sector clients too.
