Hobs Reprographics in Marylebone Lane, London has upgraded its PUR binding with the NewBind Pioneer 400 binder with end sheet lifting device from Encore Machinery.
‘A lot of clients prefer PUR rather than perfect binding because of the strength of the bind,” said Richard Maher, business development manager. ‘We produce short run hard and soft back books ranging from two to five hundred copies. These are mostly for marketing, bid work and tenders. They may also be part of a larger project where we make bespoke boxes, which can have a range of custom finishes such as foiling.’ The branch has two Indigo digital presses, large format equipment and a comprehensive range of finishing.
The improved closed tank prolongs the life of the PUR glue, allowing up to 20 reheats before the glue needs changing while the PUR glue head with auto cleaning saves maintenance time. New features also include a colour touch screen as standard. Without any setting or input from the operator every book can be a different thickness and have a different spine length.
Mr Maher continued, ‘In a competitive business we need to offer PUR binding, particularly if it is part of a larger job, but to make it viable with short run books, we wanted a binder with a small footprint in the right price bracket. Newbind was the only one we found that fitted the bill. Outsourcing was not an option because of short deadlines and quality control. As the glue takes 24 hours to dry, we are literally working to the limit to turn the urgent jobs round and deliver them the following morning.
‘This device enables end sheets to be placed in the clamp with the book block. Before the book is clamped, suckers in the clamp lower the end sheets to the spine before the cover or gauze liner are attached. End sheets can be attached to a book block with side glue on bother sides of the end sheet.
