We are fast approaching award season; the time of year when award ceremonies around the country look to honour the best work in the printing industry. If you are one of the many companies thinking of entering an award category this year, then you need to make sure you are doing it right.

Hopefully this checklist will put you on the path to glory!

1. Throughout the year collect a number of your best jobs and ensure the samples do not have any scratches or blemishes. Keep them safe and clean. Don’t just rummage around the samples cupboard at the last minute.

2. Read carefully the categories and find which pieces of work meet the category brief. Many beautiful pieces of work do not win because they are not in the appropriate category; do not be afraid to enter pieces in to more than one category.

3. Don’t enter too many products into one category – try and spread them about. Some categories have extremely strong entrants and beating them will be a challenge.

4.  Highlight why you are entering the piece into that particular category

5. Explain what was clever, innovative or challenging about producing the product.

6. Briefly detail the processes and equipment that it was produced on. Judges do take into account the degree of difficulty, especially if produced on older or less sophisticated kit.

7.  If there is anything of specific quality or detail that you are particularly proud of, highlight it in the words.

8. Demonstrate how the product added value to the customer, including where possible any information on increase in sales, response or anything else that demonstrates how effective the product was.

9. Don’t write too much – remember judges are speed reading these documents.

Hopefully after paying attention to these nine steps, you can sit back and watch the awards roll in!
