Kristian Darwin, managing director

London commercial printer Darwin Print Solutions has taken a step up in its inhouse business service with the investment in a Horizon BQ160 single clamp perfect binder.

Provided by Intelligent Finishing Systems, the new addition eliminates the need for outsourcing certain types of job. Kristian Darwin, managing director, said, ‘We were never really in the market before. We would take jobs but have to outsource them so it wasn’t a service we pushed. We are now able to approach customers more actively about perfect binding and they are very positive about it. We ran three or four jobs in the first week alone.’

He continued, ‘It will also be ideal for short runs and test proofs. Not too many people offer that service. We have three of four customers already that do annual reports for whom this will be perfect.’

Designers and agencies are among the clientele of the £300,000 turnover commercial operation. It produces litho print on a Heidelberg SRA3 two colour, a SpeedMaster SM52 and a GTO 52 and digital print on a Konica Minolta C7000.

The BQ160 single-clamp perfect binder features a colour touch screen with quick and easy set up and operation. It has multiple operation modes – with cover, without cover, tape bind, padding, notching, without notching – a motorised clamp and opening and closing. It also includes increased nipper strength and variable settings as well as stand-by mode to prevent the glue breaking down.

Mr Darwin concluded, ‘We are going to have a rejig of our sales focus but we expect to win a lot more work. It now means we don’t have to say no or send work out a cost and that will help us build stronger relationships with clients by being more responsive and cost effective.’
