The new JetStream 5500.

A digital newspaper printing and finishing line have been developed by a partnership of Océ and manroland web systems. It comprises the new Océ JetStream 5500 inkjet web press with the manroland web systems FoldLine VPF 211 variable pin folder.

The latest member of the JetStream family is the fastest to date and prints 254 metres per minute, equivalent to 5140 A4 images, on a 30 inch wide web. It’s also intended for books and transactional print work, with Océ saying the top speed is equivalent to 30,000 B2 sheets per hour. In the digital newspaper line the manroland FoldLine VPF 211 ten converts the printed web output into tabloid and broadsheet newspapers at a rate of more than 8000 24-page tabloid newspapers per hour, or 4000 broadsheet copies.

‘What makes this solution so unique is the ability to produce professionally finished newspapers during the night, and then during the day shift professional books, booklets and magazines, all on one system,’ said Sebastian Landesberger, executive vice president of Océ Commercial Printing. ‘We are giving customers the best of both worlds. Not only can they produce finished products with highest quality, this solution maximizes the customer’s return on investment like no other solution in the market.’

The newspaper solution permits variability in formats, number of newspaper sections, cut lengths, etc. Book signatures and cylinder-stitched booklets in a number of different formats can be delivered with extremely short makeready times. Océ said its DigiDot inkjet drop-on-demand and multilevel technology gives ‘excellent image quality’ of 600 x 480 dpi at 254 metres per minute, or a 1200 dpi ‘perceived image quality’ at 200 metres per minute.
