Pitney Bowes officially opened its new Global Mailing Solutions European headquarters in Hatfield Business Park last week.

This marked  the end of an era for the head office’s old location in Harlow, where the company had been based since 1963.

The company said that Hatfield was found to be the best location for its ‘natural progression.’ Some 450 people will be based at the new site, although some will work remotely for most f the time. However, 200 jobs will remain in Harlow, on another newly acquired site. It said that, coupled with an investment in technology to facilitate an agile workplace, which allows employees to work remotely, this will ensure a smooth transition to new headquarters.

Ian Davidson, European president of GMS and Councillor Helen Bromley, Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, cut a ribbon and declared the site open.

Mr Davidson said: ‘Over the course of nearly 50 years, Pitney Bowes has evolved from primarily a mailing company to a customer communications solutions provider. The transition has brought about the need for new premises, moving the headquarters from what was essentially an engineering based site, to a location more in line with the solutions and services we now offer. This change in location is designed to support agile working and facilitate the advancing needs of Pitney Bowes’ employees.’
