Although Mimaki’s main drupa announcements have been covered in previous articles, there was an unheralded prototype on its stand producing impressive demos. A camera mounted above a UJF-3042 small format UV flatbed was used as part of an intelligent object detection and personalisation system.
In the demonstration, a small object such as a phone case was placed on the print bed, in any position with no need for alignment. The camera showed the object on a screen, where it was possible to define a box ad type in a personalised message or name. The software then Ripped and rendered the message and printed it exactly in position on the real object.
The Mimaki demonstrator stressed that this was still a prototype, but said the company was showing it to gauge market reaction before deciding whether to go ahead with development into a production system.
