West London digital printer Stroma was named as best printer of digital newspapers at last week’s Newspaper Awards 2012. This recognised its full colour inkjet web printing of the Sydney Morning Herald and New York Times.
At the awards evening at held at the London Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, Steve Brown and his brother Rob, directors of Stroma, accepted the award from television presenter Gabby Logan.
The New York Times and Sydney Morning Herald are among 45 titles printed daily on an Océ JetStream 1000 web-fed inkjet production printer at Stroma. The company has offered a digital newspaper printing service since 2001, originally in monochrome but going into colour last year with the installation of an Océ JetStream inkjet press.
The Stroma submission entries beat off other shortlisted titles from across the world. They included editions of De Telegraaf, The Sunday Times, The Times, Moscow News, USA Today and Pro Football Weekly.
The judges said: ‘Clear winners in this category, these newspapers were applauded for being first-class digital products that combined market-leading technology and quality paper stock. Their digital samples were fantastic and stood out from the rest. They had punch and a quality that almost matched the offset presses.’
Steve Brown said: ‘This is a rich reward for what has been an incredible journey in the newspaper market. Océ’s unfailing support has been fantastic – we couldn’t have done all this without them.’
Craig Nethercott, Océ UK’s director of production printing, said: “Increasing numbers of the world’s most influential newspapers are turning to companies such as Stroma to print their newspapers digitally, which includes international or personalised editions.
‘
Ensuring immediate delivery in international markets of newspapers printed digitally in colour with a print quality comparable to traditional printing provides a steady revenue stream and potential growth opportunity for newspaper publishers, which Stroma is exploiting. This is a well-earned reward for what is a great team effort.’
